I wish I could be like an old lady and go to the salon once a week to have my hair done and then not have to wash or style it for a week. It's such a treat. Benjamin keeps talking about how good his hair looks. ha.
Benjamin got some play money from my mom for Christmas. He worked all morning making price tags to put on toys and setting up his store and then opened up for business to Isa and Sam. It was fun to listen to them.
While Drew hung the shelves in my mom's room that he had made her for Christmas, the kids rolled around on the bed, looking and giggling at themselves in the mirror.

Rychener Christmas

We had a lovely Christmas celebration yesterday with the Rychener family--lots of wrestling, screaming, eating, laughing and relaxing.

Stella loves looking at books already.
Grandma Pam reading the Christmas story to the kiddos.
Matt and Julie bought this whole gang new, snuggly PJs. They were so excited to have PJs that matched their cousins'.

Merry Christmas

Drew requested a new tradition be started in our home this year. He would like his Grandma Babe's cinnamon rolls for breakfast on Christmas morning. I had never attempted them before so decided to start them on Thursday just in case we failed miserably and needed to redo them. We baked them on Friday morning. Oh. my. goodness. Yes, I like our new tradition. Grandma Babe would be proud.
I put the most random things in Isa's stocking. Of all her little gifts she liked the pack of post it notes and fun edged scissors the best. She will be perfectly entertained until every last post it note is used up, cut into shreds.
She started filling little cups with paper and giving us all different 'drinks' to try.
This is the first year I finally got around to going through an advent devotional with the kids and lighting candles. I don't think the kids heard a word we said each day because their favorite part was blowing out the candles when we were done with that day's devotional.
Dressed and ready to go to Grandma Pam's house.

Christmas Eve

Oh come Emmanuel. So thankful that Jesus is with us. He is with us when our hearts are quiet and thanking him for becoming flesh and dwelling among us. He is with us when our daughter drops a bell given to her during the Christmas eve service and it rolls and clangs all the way to the front of the sanctuary to rest at the musicians feet. He is with us when she loses all self control and starts climbing over Drew to get to her bell. He is with us when we are by far the most distracted family in the sanctuary. Emmanuel. With us. So thankful.

Sock Monkeys

Benjamin and Samuel got sock monkeys from Nana a few years ago and Stella just recently got one from a friend of mine. Benjamin was very concerned that Isa was the only one that didn't have a sock monkey so Nana fixed that problem at Christmas.

Moser Christmas

We celebrated Christmas with the Moser fam yesterday. It is so nice having Drew done with his first semester of PhD work. We missed him and enjoyed spending time together as a family again this weekend!

Let's just start this post off with a little Stella Claire love. She slept terribly this weekend but she's dang cute so we'll keep her.
Charlotte and Sam feed off of each other. They were wild and giggly.
The kids played out in the snow for awhile and came in for some hot chocolate to warm their bellies.
Papa wanted to play twister with the kids. I'm pretty sure I was cashed out in the living room while they played this because I have no memory of it. Drew took the photo.
Isa snuggling under her jean quilt from Grandma Babe.
This is what Stella did for most of the gift giving.

Meeting Theo

We got to see my dear friend, Tai, and her beautiful baby boy, Theo on Friday.

Crowded

My sweet mom drove down to watch our kids so we could go to Taylor's Christmas banquet and then our Res Life Christmas party. I had to laugh at how we left them. Everyone was watching Benjamin play Lego Star Wars on the computer.

The Christmas Story

So here is the backstory to all of this: Taylor Library does a Children's Story Hour every year where kids get to hear and participate in telling The Christmas story. We will be celebrating Christmas with Drew's family this weekend so we will miss it this year. Benjamin heard Drew and I talking about it and felt bad that he wouldn't be going this year to which I responded, "We could just act it out as a family." As soon as the words left my mouth, I wanted to take it back. Benjamin gets something in his head and he does not stop talking about and planning for it until it's done. And he gives everything 110 percent. He immediately started talking about everything we would need to pull this off-the props, the costumes, the characters, etc. He quickly got frustrated with Samuel and Isa's lack of enthusiasm for his ideas and my suggestions for something a little less time consuming. When Drew came home, Benjamin was crying and feeling very frustrated. Drew had a talk with him about expectations. He affirmed Benjamin's desire to always do things with excellence. But also told him that he often sets his expectations too high for things like this. Please imagine Benjamin saying this next line with tears pouring down his face, frustration in his voice and using hand motions to emphasize his point. "But daddy! I keep lowering them and lowering them and now I don't have any ideas left." Oh bless his heart. He recovered well and lowered (waaaaay lowered) his expectations of our telling of the Christmas story. We had fun.

Benjamin wearing overalls his Uncle Matt and Uncle Josh used to wear. He is very excited about them.

Stella spends most of her waking hours (all 5 of them) laying in her boppy pillow on Benjamin, Isa or Sam. I love watching them love on her.
People remark all of the time how much these two look 'like twins'. Everyone says they look just like me. It doesn't matter how many times I hear that, I think Sam looks so much more like Drew. He may have my nose but the eyes and mouth are all Drew.
When did Eloisa grow up? I looked at this picture and could not get over how old she looks. She found a purse of mine from Guatemala and has been toting it around with her chap stick and stuffed hedgehog in it. The antique hat came from a garage sale that my friend took her to this summer.
A friend of mine bought these little slippers from Ten Thousand Villages for Stella. They were made in Guatemala. So adorable-the slippers and Stella's cankles. (cankle: n. A thick ankle, particularly one that appears to be a continuation of the calf.)

Upland Christmas Tree

We went uptown for the lighting of the Upland Christmas Tree. I am chuckling as I type this. You can only imagine how spectacular the Upland tree is. It was so windy and so cold. We ended up in the van for the big moment. It reminded me of a line from Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase: "She'll see it later Clark. Her eyes are frozen shut."

The best part of the evening was the carriage rides. We hopped in with the Pasko family.

Let it snow

It was a perfect day for playing in the snow. Not too cold and no wind. Stella watched her siblings build a little snowman and never fussed once. She's a champ.

Remembering Grandma Babe

My (Drew) Grandma Moser (affectionately known as "Grandma Babe") passed away the morning after Thanksgiving. Her health had been in decline for the past 6 months, so her passing was expected, but still very hard. She was a 'matriarch' in the truest and purest sense of the word. She was a pillar of faith; a devoted prayer warrior; a woman of God's Word.

In all my life, I don't ever remember her saying anything negative about anyone. If she ever inched close to an insult, she would always be sure to cover her tracks with an emphatic "Bless their heart..."

She loved her kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and nieces/nephews unconditionally....and she made the best cinnamon rolls on earth. Hands. Down.

Her funeral service was on Tuesday. For a woman of 93, who lived in a town where the population is declining, her little country church was bursting with people with touching and powerful stories of the way Grandma Babe blessed others. Her church was in between "preachers" and so the family did the service by committee. I think she preferred it this way.

Her life was marked by a simple, powerful faith that sustained her through many trials and hardships. Through it all, she loved so well.

Goodbye for now, Grandma Babe. You are missed already.
