Fall Fun
The kids had so much fun tonight collecting candy around the neighborhood as well as in the dorms. All of the sugar was good for helping them stay awake an hour later tonight.

We had a Hall Director Social this afternoon. This is all of Res Life staff's kiddos. I love how Jared is trying to make Sam smile. We woke Isa and Sam up to go-can you tell?
Sam did not let me put him down for most of the party because of the picture two below. He was absolutely terrified (shaking, crying, clinging to me) of the Taylor Fort Wayne Falcon.

Hiding God's Word?
On Wednesday nights, Benjamin has been attending a kids' program put on by our church. He has gone three times and loves it. Each week they have a memory verse to learn for the next week.
Benjamin was talking to my mom today and was telling her his memory verses that he has learned. My mom said, "Benjamin! I am so proud of you and excited that you are hiding God's Word in your heart." Benjamin exclaimed, "Hiding??!! If I hide it, how will God find it?"
I am thankful today that nothing is hidden from our great God and I'm also thankful that Benjamin is not hiding these truths but rather proclaiming them and remembering them.
Hebrews 4:13 "Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare to Him to whom we must give account."

Letters
It's been a few months but it's still a crazy thing to see Benjamin writing his name. When did my baby grow up and start asking me how to spell things? He now is correcting me when I write words in all capital letters. "Mama, that's not how you do that. You need to use lower case. Let me show you, okay?"
I also felt really old school when I got a note home from his teacher a few weeks ago saying that kids would not be learning cursive anymore-people don't write anymore, they type. I can't remember the last time I wrote in cursive but it was still weird for Drew and I to hear our kids wouldn't even learn it.

Field Trip
I went with Benjamin's class to a pumpkin patch today. It was great to meet all of Benjamin's little friends that he talks about and their moms. They had a little lesson for the kids about how pumpkins grow, they went through a corn maze, they got to hold little chicks, and they went on a hay ride out to the pumpkin patch to pick their own pumpkins. We could not have asked for a more beautiful day--70 and sunny!

Love Her
The kiddos
We had to say goodbye to our sweet friends last night. It was such a fun week. It was a great blessing to catch up and laugh and play games. We miss you guys already. Drew commented today that he already misses our dishwasher, Tim. :)
Samuel and Samantha--these pictures will be displayed on the slide show at their wedding.

Benjamin loved holding Samantha. He leaned down and was talking to her in the sweetest voice. "Baby Samantha, that's Piglet on your shirt. You have Piglet on your shirt and I watched a movie called Piglet's Big Movie."

Isa Joy and Sammy Jean
Hats
Tim, Kristi, and Samantha arrived last night from Vancouver to spend the week with us! Hooray! It is so good to be with them again. They brought hats for the kids from Canada. Benjamin is so obsessed with his hat that he slept in it for a little while last night.
5 Years
Today marks 5 years since my dad went to be with Jesus. It seems unreal that it has been that long and yet most days it feels like even longer since I have had a huge, crushing (in a good way) hug from him. It doesn't seem possible that he hasn't held any of my kids and let them crawl all over his belly. At this stage in my life, that is what I struggle with the most--a quiet ache that just longs for him to be a part of their lives and a part of shaping them as he shaped me. I read my dad's mission statement this morning and smiled as I thought about his life and how he so faithfully, with the help of the Spirit in him, lived this out. (With the exception of #11 which was always a struggle. :) "You going to finish that, Bekah?")
2. To be loved and respected most by Pam and the kids.
3. To be an encourager of others and help them reach their potential.
4. To be an empathetic listener at all times.
5. To be a reconcilor and not a party to gossip.
6. To be orderly in every area of my life without treating others bad if they are not.
7. To be diligent at work and risk more enjoying life everyday.
8. To be positive at all times choosing my response to life's hurdles.
9. To be courageous to try new things, to only fear not getting helpful feedback.
10. To be a friend to at least one new believer each year, sharing my life.
11. To be self-controlled so that I eat to live, not live to eat.
12. To be a loving son to my mom and Pam's folks.
13. To share the truths I've learned and to love those who reject my beliefs.
What's your mission statement? Are you living it today?
"Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands." 2 Corinthians 5:1
The thought just came to me that it could be fun to read other's favorite memories of my dad to my kids. If you have a funny or meaningful memory of their Grandpa Chuck and have the time, would you email it to me?

Pumpkins!
We were in OH this weekend for a wedding. (Jodi, it was all beautiful and so fun!) Drew and I opted to go to the wedding without our children so that we could actually relax and enjoy it. We also went on a date Friday night to get our hair cut (we consider anything we do without kids a date) and then went out to eat with friends. So the kids got to spend lots of time with Grandma Pam, Uncle Matt and Aunt Julie and the kids of course loved it.
Today before we headed home, we took the kids out to Aunt Julie's parent's pumpkin patch and the kids got to pick their pumpkin off the vine.

Favorite Recipe
We hosted a meal for 30 people in our apartment last night and I served one of my family's favorite meals. Here is the recipe for those of you who requested it. It is a little time consuming-not your "Shoot it's 5:00 what are we going to have for dinner?" meal. But OH SO WORTH the time. It is bursting with flavor. (Do I sound like a food critic?) Someone last night said to me, "I'm only telling you this because I like what I'm eating. I don't like rice and I don't like beans but this is really good." So there you go people who don't like beans--just try it. All three of my kids love it. They like to use tortilla chips as a spoon to eat it.
Many thanks to the Warkentins, our friends in Vancouver, for introducing us to this. I think they got the recipe out of a More with Less cookbook.
Cuban Black Bean Soup
serves 6-8
1# (2 cups) dried black beans
8 c. water (I do half water and half chicken broth or I just throw in 4 chicken bouillon cubes with the water once it's boiling.)
2 bay leaves
fresh oregano sprigs (if available)
1 dried ancho or New Mexican chili pepper OR 1 fresh whole jalapeno
1/4 c. olive oil
2 yellow onions (peeled and chopped)
2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp dried leaf oregano
6-8 garlic cloves (I always do 8...or 9...the more the better in my opinion..I've always heard if you think you have added enough garlic, add one more:)
2 Tbsp red wine vinegar
1 tsp. thyme
1 green bell pepper (seeds and stem removed and diced)
1-2 jalapeno or serrano peppers (remove seeds/membranes OR mince with some seeds for more heat)
1 15-oz can diced tomatoes, with juice (you can omit the tomatoes and just garnish soup with fresh chopped tomatoes but I like the tomatoes in the soup)
1 tsp honey
1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp salt
Garnish with chopped white onion or sliced green onions, fresh cilantro sprigs (if available), plain yogurt or sour cream, grated Monterey jack or white cheddar cheese. Serve over rice. (Drew likes to throw salsa and crushed up tortilla chips on top. Just do whatever sounds good to you.)
Rinse, then soak beans over night in plenty of water OR for faster method (when you don't plan your meals the day before like me), cover beans with fresh cold water by 2" and bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 2 minutes. Turn off heat and cover for 2 hours.
Drain beans and rinse well.
Put pre-soaked beans in soup pot with 8 cups of fresh, cold water. Add bay leaves, fresh oregano sprigs, dried chili pepper or fresh jalapeno. Bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer until beans are tender, about an hour. Remove herbs and pepper.
While beans are cooking, add the diced bell pepper and minced hot pepper to the soup pot as you finish chopping them.
While beans are cooking, heat olive oil over medium heat in a heavy pan. Add onion, 1/2 tsp salt and cumin. Saute until onion is soft and translucent. Add garlic, oregano, thyme and red wine vinegar and simmer a few minutes. Add tomatoes, honey and 1/4 tsp salt. Continue to simmer for a few minutes.
For a thicker soup, once the beans are tender, mash some of the beans against the side of the pot or remove a cup or two of beans and puree them in a blender or food processor with a bit of the broth, then return the puree to the soup pot. (I don't mess with any of this.)
When the beans are completely tender, add the sauteed vegetables and some freshly ground black pepper.
Serve over rice.
*If beans aren't tender, the salt in the saute will make the beans tough.
*Taste and adjust seasonings. Add more honey if the tomatoes are still too acidic.
*Add additional water if the consistency seems too thick.

Videos
My dear friend who is a long, long, long ways away in Vancouver requested video footage awhile ago of the kids talking and I've just been a huge slacker on the video front. I had these two videos on my camera so I thought I would upload them for my friend even though Benjamin and Isa don't do a lot of talking. I will look for opportunities to shoot some video of the older two chatting-but every time they see the camera it sort of ruins the moment and they get distracted.
Sam's little voice just kills me. It's so cute and sweet and I totally and absolutely love this age.

Drew's favorite thing to distract the kids with when they are whiny or arguing is to shout, "Stop! [long pause] Everybody dance!" And they all immediately stop what they are doing and start grooving. It cracks me up. This is just the tail end when the kids had taken over saying, "Stop! Dance!" so there was more stopping than dancing going on.Everybody Dance! from drewandbekah on Vimeo.
